Shirley Jean McGugan passed away on April 8, 2024, at the age of 96. She was born to Charles and Lucille Baldwin in Holdenville, Oklahoma. She graduated from Holdenville High School in 1945 and from Christian College (Columbia, Missouri) in 1947. She received a BAin 1949 from the University of Oklahoma.

She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church of Holdenville.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Lucille Baldwin, of Holdenville. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Boyd McGugan, in 1947 and they celebrated 54 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2002. Shirley is survived by three daughters, Sherry Bennett (Oklahoma City), Nancy Olivares (Ricardo); (Albuquerque, NM), Kelly Cravens (Norman, OK); five grandchildren, Kerry Page, Lindy Sproul (Scott), Hunter Curry, Samantha Sanders (Ryan) and Kristiana Van Winkle (Jeremy); eight great-grandchildren; Cris Carr (Taylor), Zach Carr, Drew Sproul, Erik Sproul, Rylee Sanders, Addison Sanders, Reid Van Winkle and Tucker Van Winkle, and two great-great-grandchildren; Mason Carr and Ellie Carr. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 1PM - Hudson Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Robinson officiating and Pastor Dane Robinson assisting. Graveside rights following at Holdenville Cemetery.

Another storm victim at another time

On the night of September 23, 2023, a severe storm hit Holdenville with strong damaging winds. There has been talk and speculation of it possibly being a tornado that didn’t completely touch down. Damage was severe in the area of Holdenville Cemetery and Holdenville Stroup Park. There was extensive tree damage, and one huge sycamore tree blew over totally uprooting and partially uncovered a grave it was growing on. The tombstone on the grave was turned over, also. Out of curiosity Waylon Ford, the Holdenville Cemetery Sexton, decided to turn the tombstone over and see who’s grave it was. As he tilted the stone backwards the last name of Ford was showing and only the W of the first name due to his hands covering the rest of the name. As his eerie thoughts and feelings of who the grave belonged to flooded his mind, Waylon saw that it was the tombstone of William U. Ford.

Marlene Camille Woods

Marlene Camille Woods was born August 1, 1932 in Stockton, California, to Harlow and Bessie Magnussen. The first child and eldest daughter; a child of the Great Depression and WWII. Marlene was a true example of the resilient and determined generation that these two events proved to develop.
